A couple years ago I figured out how to blow a bubble so it freezes around a Becorn. The process requires freezing cold temperatures, and no wind. For the picture to really shine, I needed snow on the ground, and to take the picture during sunrise or sunset. These are rare conditions where I live in Rhode Island, but finally there came a day in February when the forecast looked promising. I set up a scene, woke up before dawn, and started blowing bubbles. Turns out, there was slightest breeze in the air, and the bubbles kept popping before they could freeze. Frantically, I threw together a structure to block the wind, but it wasn’t enough. With frozen fingers, I was forced to give up. As luck would have it though, the weather for the next day looked good. So I fortified my ridiculous breeze blocker, and woke up early again. As the sun rose, I got this picture. I like it a lot, but if I’m totally honest, I wish the light were more magical. Maybe I’ll try again this winter. Maybe not though. It was so cold!","comment_count":0,"like_count":0,"timestamp":"2024-12-13T14:31:37Z","account_id":"2ff23bdc-5ffd-11ef-a556-7ef760d7d330","source_id":"2ff4c38b-5ffd-11ef-8731-16dde0ae79ba","carousel":[{"id":"17919123222011075","media_type":"IMAGE","thumbnail_url":"","media_url":"https://widget-static.onecommerce.io/widget_source_media/6/5/8/m0wACSRrpuFmbg/2ff4c38b-5ffd-11ef-8731-16dde0ae79ba/3b95a8f7-14ae-11f0-a951-3e814176ffae/17919123222011075/media","timestamp":"2024-12-13T14:31:36Z"},{"id":"18258985600256809","media_type":"VIDEO","thumbnail_url":"","media_url":"https://widget-static.onecommerce.io/widget_source_media/6/5/8/m0wACSRrpuFmbg/2ff4c38b-5ffd-11ef-8731-16dde0ae79ba/3b95a8f7-14ae-11f0-a951-3e814176ffae/18258985600256809/media","timestamp":"2024-12-13T14:31:36Z"},{"id":"18065785627744769","media_type":"VIDEO","thumbnail_url":"","media_url":"https://widget-static.onecommerce.io/widget_source_media/6/5/8/m0wACSRrpuFmbg/2ff4c38b-5ffd-11ef-8731-16dde0ae79ba/3b95a8f7-14ae-11f0-a951-3e814176ffae/18065785627744769/media","timestamp":"2024-12-13T14:31:36Z"}]},{"media_id":"3b95fd5a-14ae-11f0-a952-3e814176ffae","media_type":"VIDEO","media_url":"https://widget-static.onecommerce.io/widget_source_media/6/5/8/m0wACSRrpuFmbg/2ff4c38b-5ffd-11ef-8731-16dde0ae79ba/3b95fd5a-14ae-11f0-a952-3e814176ffae/media","thumbnail_url":"https://widget-static.onecommerce.io/widget_source_media/6/5/8/m0wACSRrpuFmbg/2ff4c38b-5ffd-11ef-8731-16dde0ae79ba/3b95fd5a-14ae-11f0-a952-3e814176ffae/thumbnail","permalink":"https://www.instagram.com/reel/DDXSugBR4Gv/","caption":"2025 calendars are out now on my website, davidmbird.com! He’s not a Becorn, but maybe the Becorns tell stories of the mysterious pumpkin man that tromps through the woods this time of year.","comment_count":0,"like_count":0,"timestamp":"2024-10-31T13:55:56Z","account_id":"2ff23bdc-5ffd-11ef-a556-7ef760d7d330","source_id":"2ff4c38b-5ffd-11ef-8731-16dde0ae79ba"},{"media_id":"b58548d2-92de-11ef-875b-da41a258d061","media_type":"VIDEO","media_url":"https://scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com/o1/v/t2/f2/m367/AQNUPcZ4DW7bnzrj--EUnsAzfU7jozrbAfHQmGZ4l4ziQ74Rlgr0AZhjkvdiFWKr3Bejsq6gdFvijlGsdM2GP5iAlkSW1GF1s56XqS4.mp4?_nc_cat=102&_nc_sid=5e9851&_nc_ht=scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com&_nc_ohc=zqXzHzsS0DUQ7kNvwHdaGYv&efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6Inhwdl9wcm9ncmVzc2l2ZS5JTlNUQUdSQU0uQ0xJUFMuQzMuNzIwLmRhc2hfYmFzZWxpbmVfMV92MSIsInhwdl9hc3NldF9pZCI6NTc1NzY2NTY0ODcxNTc2LCJ2aV91c2VjYXNlX2lkIjoxMDA5OSwiZHVyYXRpb25fcyI6MTM4LCJ1cmxnZW5fc291cmNlIjoid3d3In0%3D&ccb=17-1&vs=451ced0d82bb14d4&_nc_vs=HBksFQIYQGlnX2VwaGVtZXJhbC83NzQ0NTcyRjIyQjJDMkMwODY5RDY3NjE3ODUzMTNCOV92aWRlb19kYXNoaW5pdC5tcDQVAALIARIAFQIYOnBhc3N0aHJvdWdoX2V2ZXJzdG9yZS9HT3JkcWh0ZVlsNHdVaWdHQUNNUzlsTW4tcU5NYnFfRUFBQUYVAgLIARIAKAAYABsCiAd1c2Vfb2lsATEScHJvZ3Jlc3NpdmVfcmVjaXBlATEVAAAmsPaUmYPqhQIVAigCQzMsF0BhV52yLQ5WGBJkYXNoX2Jhc2VsaW5lXzFfdjERAHX-B2XmnQEA&_nc_zt=28&oh=00_AfXHcz8osali_gGIqzBvb-2NgZbOKWPedqTmPDKhCbhw6g&oe=6899150B","thumbnail_url":"https://scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.71878-15/504386016_738858105229087_8284655391911042477_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_tt6&_nc_cat=101&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=18de74&_nc_ohc=D4LP48idzdkQ7kNvwHxvPKy&_nc_oc=Adm83h-qSbHD7G3oCZg89fQbM0UiUf-HYO_nn61iWWd_Y1tfhN181UuYzHK-VFUnUHY&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&_nc_gid=HzTxt5JclbCfW2t5ioy8Vw&oh=00_AfW5rL_x_mYyzuy3Iyi-jNrLXgrRm73hO7WEbcjG58rjDQ&oe=689905B8","permalink":"https://www.instagram.com/reel/DBg5Wx8vWFL/","caption":"This was a fun little project from the summer that I finally finished, and I’m so excited to share! To me, it’s about friendship and the infinite possibilities of summer. \n\nThis picture has been in the works for years, believe it or not. I found the log four years ago on the side of a bike path and I carried it back to my car on my bike. Each year since, I’ve made a bit of progress in setting up the shot, but I’ve always run out of time. Finally this spring I managed to plant the vine at the base of the log, and all summer I’ve been steering its growth to sit nicely around the hole. I dropped everything when the flowers bloomed and WOO HOO, I got some pics! I’m working on a video about the process, but it will be a little while before I finish it. (I’m still working on videos from June.) \n\nI will definitely release this as a print later in the fall. now.","comment_count":0,"like_count":0,"timestamp":"2024-07-01T15:10:57Z","account_id":"2ff23bdc-5ffd-11ef-a556-7ef760d7d330","source_id":"2ff4c38b-5ffd-11ef-8731-16dde0ae79ba","carousel":[{"id":"18040883860907751","media_type":"IMAGE","thumbnail_url":"","media_url":"https://scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com/v/t39.30808-6/449527214_18421238800070217_5481626089539446083_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_tt6&_nc_cat=105&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=18de74&_nc_ohc=ps4i3UGULxMQ7kNvwF1O8zZ&_nc_oc=AdkjMsT1s6ZUVx6OUZ-XqMnVtLNcAWmDtjYyXv0jELXyQu1fD4YRCSnCwNEb9F-gST4&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&_nc_gid=HzTxt5JclbCfW2t5ioy8Vw&oh=00_AfUawFIUaVD95BCoZEc6Zs97SM8A4f6sNTcyn94SjZy57g&oe=68990F2F","timestamp":"2024-07-01T15:10:56Z"},{"id":"17984422034533806","media_type":"VIDEO","thumbnail_url":"","media_url":"https://scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com/o1/v/t16/f2/m69/AQNQnR16ETV0-TfAK02c-D9rgFn47hJJHhqaUcua6Oh_1V9_tqlFrSQGEdbvU3hpL85il26GJAwycgnz64TWFyRU.mp4?strext=1&_nc_cat=105&_nc_sid=5e9851&_nc_ht=scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com&_nc_ohc=VAuecUZHRVUQ7kNvwHSiYol&efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6Inhwdl9wcm9ncmVzc2l2ZS5JTlNUQUdSQU0uQ0FST1VTRUxfSVRFTS5DMy43MjAuZGFzaF9iYXNlbGluZV8xX3YxIiwieHB2X2Fzc2V0X2lkIjozMzQ0MjEwNTYzNzg5MTgsImFzc2V0X2FnZV9kYXlzIjo0MDAsInZpX3VzZWNhc2VfaWQiOjEwMTQ2LCJkdXJhdGlvbl9zIjoyNCwidXJsZ2VuX3NvdXJjZSI6Ind3dyJ9&ccb=17-1&vs=978af1bab46f2d11&_nc_vs=HBksFQIYOnBhc3N0aHJvdWdoX2V2ZXJzdG9yZS9HQ3ZJeEJvaUxOaklJNUFEQUk3TjFYOHNfNWdKYmtZTEFBQUYVAALIARIAFQIYOnBhc3N0aHJvdWdoX2V2ZXJzdG9yZS9HTUN1d1JyejRfN18xZ1FOQUhFYnFLdmg3N1pjYmtZTEFBQUYVAgLIARIAKAAYABsCiAd1c2Vfb2lsATEScHJvZ3Jlc3NpdmVfcmVjaXBlATEVAAAmzOCqhO-JmAEVAigCQzMsF0A4DtkWhysCGBJkYXNoX2Jhc2VsaW5lXzFfdjERAHXuB2XEngEA&_nc_zt=28&oh=00_AfVCPuvA5yeXI1oQQXZ9PfeRQ_WBrI1B9QZupnM1pd_Wzw&oe=68992E7B","timestamp":"2024-07-01T15:10:56Z"}]},{"media_id":"3123677d-5ffd-11ef-801e-fa8a2368fe81","media_type":"VIDEO","media_url":"https://scontent-ord5-3.cdninstagram.com/o1/v/t2/f2/m82/AQNlmqTo2Q64YMG4_AOEqnso5CsLb4jVAclftuaI4YVAHD3cM4ZnUDHq0XHorWwHnHtuXMAW51b4j88abm8LbJMqIHamDWCzflHaNg0.mp4?_nc_cat=106&_nc_sid=5e9851&_nc_ht=scontent-ord5-3.cdninstagram.com&_nc_ohc=l5xVcGfWYlcQ7kNvwFlcyWu&efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6Inhwdl9wcm9ncmVzc2l2ZS5JTlNUQUdSQU0uQ0xJUFMuQzMuNzIwLmRhc2hfYmFzZWxpbmVfMV92MSIsInhwdl9hc3NldF9pZCI6Mzg2Mzc5Mzk3Mzg0MjE5NiwiYXNzZXRfYWdlX2RheXMiOjQ0NiwidmlfdXNlY2FzZV9pZCI6MTAwOTksImR1cmF0aW9uX3MiOjkwLCJ1cmxnZW5fc291cmNlIjoid3d3In0%3D&ccb=17-1&vs=397ba6e7f8d1e626&_nc_vs=HBksFQIYT2lnX3hwdl9yZWVsc19wZXJtYW5lbnRfcHJvZC8wMDQ4QjU1MUQ5MzRFRTkwMTA3RERFQjRCRDdBMTZBQl92aWRlb19kYXNoaW5pdC5tcDQVAALIARIAFQIYOnBhc3N0aHJvdWdoX2V2ZXJzdG9yZS9HTFhqYXhvYmpubUdlYTBCQU5MQ2NYd1FNUmMwYnFfRUFBQUYVAgLIARIAKAAYABsCiAd1c2Vfb2lsATEScHJvZ3Jlc3NpdmVfcmVjaXBlATEVAAAmqMTetLSG3Q0VAigCQzMsF0BWgGJN0vGqGBJkYXNoX2Jhc2VsaW5lXzFfdjERAHX-B2XmnQEA&_nc_zt=28&oh=00_AfUJseWVNGjNARciyYTCFSUnSek6j_s2gzU11QQnaFUaTA&oe=6895109B","thumbnail_url":"https://scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.71878-15/503728476_4200418926846364_4724263637145976510_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_tt6&_nc_cat=105&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=18de74&_nc_ohc=SAPQDB5jcGoQ7kNvwFD6GLr&_nc_oc=AdkMUI7LhgdbcRl23ZkWyi8adK_Vl9Q1zKw0qhys3-VNF6iAiZpMzKKI2rImfWbSKAE&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&_nc_gid=HzTxt5JclbCfW2t5ioy8Vw&oh=00_AfXiNBavji32xdCkkWJQnRDwhvzxDQo_y9WjB2rRq74f2g&oe=68993223","permalink":"https://www.instagram.com/reel/C7CI2ZWr_rT/","caption":"I had such a great time meeting @ThomasDambo. Our work is very similar, aside from the obvious scale difference, so I was struck by how different our processes are. I’m able to create Becorns alone in my basement, and it’s my way of escaping into my own little world, where I can find a state of flow. \n\nThomas, on the other hand, loves to create art in public spaces. He travels the world with a team of about 20 people, and he invites extra volunteers to help. I visited his crew as they were working and I was impressed at how much was happening at once, and how he was able to manage it all. My head would’ve exploded. \n\nYou can watch our full discussion on his YouTube channel, @ThomasDambo. This was his yearly springtime ritual, before the bustle of planting began.”\n\nI took this picture with Loo’s eyes open, but I photoshopped them closed and I like it so much more. It’s amazing to me how such a small change can make a picture so much more interesting. I’m including the eyes open version so you can compare. (Why would he ignore the chickadee?!)\n\nI haven’t posted in a while because I’ve been working on the 2025 calendar. I decided to handle all the design, printing, and distribution myself, rather than working with a publisher, which I did for the 2024 calendar. (And by “myself,” I mean I’m hiring companies to help me.) It’s a lot of work to figure out, but I should be able to get more calendars to people who want them. (I’m talking about you EU and UK!)
