I would love to make a mushroom hat if I could find a good one. \n\nI had fun filming that dandelion opening on Poppy’s head. I staged the scene indoors so I could control the light. I learned that dandelions open as a response to drying out. The first time I tried it, it took 2 days to open. The next time, I put it in a small room with a dehumidifier and it opened overnight. A couple years ago I figured out how to blow a bubble so it freezes around a Becorn. The process requires freezing cold temperatures, and no wind. For the picture to really shine, I needed snow on the ground, and to take the picture during sunrise or sunset. These are rare conditions where I live in Rhode Island, but finally there came a day in February when the forecast looked promising. I set up a scene, woke up before dawn, and started blowing bubbles. Turns out, there was slightest breeze in the air, and the bubbles kept popping before they could freeze. Frantically, I threw together a structure to block the wind, but it wasn’t enough. With frozen fingers, I was forced to give up. As luck would have it though, the weather for the next day looked good. So I fortified my ridiculous breeze blocker, and woke up early again. As the sun rose, I got this picture. I like it a lot, but if I’m totally honest, I wish the light were more magical. Maybe I’ll try again this winter. Maybe not though. I found the log four years ago on the side of a bike path and I carried it back to my car on my bike. Finally this spring I managed to plant the vine at the base of the log, and all summer I’ve been steering its growth to sit nicely around the hole. The only way the two photos would match up was to take the second photo in the exact same spot as the first, at the same time of day, with the same weather. It took me hours of trial and error to locate the exact camera spot for the second picture. It’s amazing to me how such a small change can make a picture so much more interesting. I’m including the eyes open version so you can compare. I decided to handle all the design, printing, and distribution myself, rather than working with a publisher, which I did for the 2024 calendar.
